Tracking Your Federal Refund: A Quick Guide

If you have already filed your return for the 2025 tax season, the question on your mind is likely: "When will the funds hit my account?" As we remind our clients here in Manchester, the IRS has moved almost exclusively to electronic transfers. It is safer, significantly faster, and reduces the taxpayer cost associated with printing and mailing paper checks. If you do not have a traditional bank account, the IRS now utilizes prepaid debit cards to ensure you still get your money efficiently.

Using the "Where's My Refund?" Tool

Regardless of how your refund is being delivered, you do not need to wait in the dark. The most reliable way to check your status is through the official online portal.

Where’s My Refund? is the IRS's interactive tool available 24/7. Whether you split your refund across multiple accounts or sent it all to one checking account, this is your primary source of truth.

For clients who utilized our e-filing services at CPA Consulting Services, you can typically check the status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. If you filed a paper return, the wait is significantly longer—data usually isn't available until four weeks after mailing.

What You Need to Check Your Status

To keep your data secure, the system requires specific verification. Have a copy of your filed tax return in front of you before you log in. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The tax year (ensure you select 2025 for the current season, though 2024 and 2023 are available),

  • Your filing status (Single, Married Filing Jointly, etc.), and

  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on your return.

Once verified, you will see one of three statuses: Received (they have it), Approved (they are prepping payment), or Sent (the money is on the way). If the status is "Sent," allow up to 5 days for your bank to process the funds.

Timelines and Mobile Options

Generally, nine out of 10 e-filed refunds are issued in fewer than 21 days. However, certain returns requiring additional review may take longer. If you prefer tracking via mobile, the IRS offers a free app called IRS2Go, available for Apple and Android devices.

Should You Call the IRS?

In short: No, unless the tool specifically directs you to. The Where’s My Refund? portal is updated once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Calling our office or the IRS agents will not speed up the process, as the phone agents generally have the same information you see online.

However, if it has been more than 21 days since you e-filed and the tool provides no update, or if you receive a notice in the mail, that is when you should reach out to us. We are here to help navigate any complexities or delays.
